Garden: Week 10

After not seeing the garden every day for a week, it feels like everything has gone wild.  I am continually amazed by my mess of plants.  Not only are weeds everywhere, some grew taller than my knee.
We have had record setting, hot, scorching days for the past few days.  You can see the nasturtiums on the left are a bit wilted along with the cilantro and carrot tops.
First zucchini.  It is an Italian striped variety with thinner, less tough skin.  I can't wait to try it.
 Green beans, yum!
Corn!  The tassels are out and one already has silk.  It's happening just as Grandpa said it would...though he said I would need a lot more than 24 plants.  Cross our fingers we get some ears of corn out of this fun experiment.
See the silk?  Also the plant is swelling--I think this is a good sign :)
Tomatoes...what can I say.  These plants are huge.
If you look really close, you can see cherry tomatoes growing.
Cilantro just before Elena ate it :)
Nutterbutter squash flowers.  The flower is huge just like the leaves.  The black specks are ants.
Our first nutterbutter squash growing!!  (Isn't this exciting?!)
Carrots are looking good.  Since we have metal hardware cloth under the beds, I planted two short carrot varieties.  Isn't this cute?  We have enough to eat for dinner and the tops will be a perfect addition to our green smoothies.  Temp was 99 yesterday and anticipated to be in the high 90s again today, bleh.
Watermelon are starting to get going.  Looking good!
Strawberries started setting runners.  I was so excited about the new plants I didn't know I was supposed to clip the runners.  I've learned my established plants will be reducing their production now as they put energy into the baby plants.  On the plus side, I'll have new plants for next year :)
We have a few blueberries starting to ripen.
This tree is nuts.  It is a Dorsett Golden Apple.  It has already set 2-3 sets of flowers, and more flowers are showing up.  I've thinned this tree but as you can see, I need to thin it again!
Red Fuji Apple with fruit and more blossoms.
Pink Lady Apple never lost her leaves from last year but we have blossoms.  This tree should be loving all this heat.  I love my pink lady apples!
Red Baron Peach looking so yummy. (yellow)
 Snow Queen Nectarine (white)
 Babcock Peach (white)

The pluots and plum will need a good thinning this summer.
 Flavor King Pluot
 Flavor Grenade Pluots
 Japanese Burgundy Plum
I keep fretting about the avocado tree: the leaves droop, yellowing, brown tips.  Well there is new growth.  It could mean the yellowing droopy leaves are from last year and just didn't fall off yet.  New growth is promising!
I planted more sugar peas, carrots and spinach in barrels.  After the last week of heat, only the sugar peas are thriving.
Looks like the hydrangea will be blooming this year :)
The eggplant and bell pepper seeds in the garden aren't doing much so I planted them in yogurt containers.  They have sprouted, let's see if they grow into plants.
