Just three short weeks ago, Elena began her first session of swim lessons and today is her last day.
To get the kids warmed up, the teacher put a floating backpack on them and asked them to swim.
Elena is working really hard to breathe when she comes up for air.
She also struggles with relaxing enough to float on her back.
But when it comes to jumping in, she makes a big splash! I'm sure she is glad she has a rash guard on her tummy because she is doing flat out belly flops. The other kids jump feet down; Elena's natural instinct is to dive.
After jumping in, she puts her face down and swims out to the teacher...who keeps walking backward.
She brings her head up about 3 times before she is worn out. Her biggest obstacle is to control her breathing. Once mastered she will be able to move up to the next level. In the meantime, she'll be repeating this level in June. She loves to swim and says: "swimming is my favorite sport!"
The drawback to swimming is the gummy hair. Although a positive thing has come out of this...Elena is reluctantly allowing me to brush out her hair and has even let me braid and put pony tails in her hair. Normally we only get to comb out her hair when it is wet, straight from the bath. Her scalp is very sensitive, she doesn't like her head or hair touched. I'm happy with this small improvement :)
