Letter of the Day

Today Elena said her first letter: W (sounds like dubbie) during our ABC song.  She also picked up a new animal noise: hoo-hoo.  She says it in almost a whisper at first.  Elena is just a sponge right now.  It is hard to keep up with all the new stuff she does.  As a sponge, she absorbs everything everyone says...watch out!  Her favorite phrase right now might be "oh, no"; she says this instead of uh-oh.

Today we celebrated a friend's birthday and there was a surprise guest, Winnie the Pooh!  Oh what fun the kids had with him.

This was soon after we arrived; Elena was still taking everything and everyone in.

Once she crawled in the tunnel, she didn't want to climb out!  And for the record, Elena doesn't like the feel of grass or fake turf, go figure.

Dancing with Pooh, Thing 1 and Thing 2.
Elena made a new friend, a 4 year old boy.  He was just cracking her up; they both had a great time playing.
Watch out, a cow is driving the fire truck!!

Kitchen Continued...

Well if you read the previous post, you're probably wondering what Elena was doing while we were working on the kitchen.  She was confined to the living room for quite a few days.  She played with toys, read books with Grandma and Papa and ran around outside.  She also watched a lot of television.  Not our proudest moment but it allowed us to keep her safe and let us work.  She loves Dora and asks for "Do-do" now.  But don't worry, we'll be getting back to regular activities and television will be a thing of that past--or at least in moderation.  The following pictures were taken yesterday as we started wrapping up cabinet installation.  She loves climbing in and out of the empty cabinets!

Kitchen Evolution

Well it's been a while since I last posted and we have been busy.  Between everyday activities, I have been planning and prepping for a kitchen remodel.  It has been a huge undertaking, just like everyone says but totally worth it.  I'm glad we decided to do it before I go back to work in January, I don't think I could have made all the decisions needed while working full time (I tend to be indecisive and more so when exhausted).  We aren't complete but put in about 5 work days; thought you might enjoy to see how far we have come.

The only picture I have of the kitchen as it looked when we bought it.  The first thing we did before we moved in was take down the drapes to expose the view of the mountain (it's small, about 1300 feet above sea level) and remove the wallpaper.  I put down some temporary peel and stick flooring, had dishwasher installed where the previous owner hung a curtain.  Then energy efficient windows went in, almost a must with those large south facing kitchen and dining room windows.  Makes a huge difference in our house temp without having drapes covering the windows.
The kitchen as we lived with it for 3 years (above and below).
My parents came flew in prepared to work.  I had hoped the whole trip would not be a working one but it was.  As expected we ran into a few problems just not the problems I was expecting and the problems I was anticipating were not problems after all.  The fridge had been leaking, unknown to us, and the water had trickled under the floor creating a lot of wetness of the sub floor.  Lucky for us the sub floor was not rotted only the base for the old pantry and peninsula--it was a stinky mess!
Demo complete!
We continued the floor that runs in the dining area, living room and hallways.  We had just enough to finish off the kitchen.  Whew!
 Floors complete!

First cabinet hung!
We purchased ready to assemble cabinets and I assembled them.  Assembly wasn't complicated just time consuming with a toddler running around.  And bulky to have the assembled cabinets sitting around the house.
First shot of the semi-completed kitchen remodel.  Notice more space between the stove and the peninsula?  Love it!  Now we can both move around the kitchen at the same time, wahoo!  Actually we had four adults in there with room to spare.  It is a much better space for our family.
We removed the pantry that used to be to the right of the fridge and faced out into the dining room.  I really needed more counter space.  So now I have nearly 3 feet to work with on the left of the fridge--it's a whole new work area.  And the storage above is new too which helps offset loosing the pantry.  Don't mind the missing door--had a blemish and need to get a new one.  Right next to the fridge is open shelving for my cook books and what ever else I feel like looking at :)
A better view of the extra space we created by moving the dishwasher next to the sink and pushing the peninsula into the dining area.  The peninsula area will be drawers for pots and pans; I need to assemble them.  The open cabinet to the right of the dishwasher will be the sink (yet to purchase).
Can you see all the space between the fridge and the peninsula?  Two people can now pass through the space, or you can have the fridge open and someone can still enter/exit the kitchen.  Fabulous!  The old set up was just enough room for one person to pass through or have the fridge open, not both.  Actually, I almost didn't put that peninsula back in, keeping a "U" shaped kitchen was so open looking but I really needed a place for pots and pans, another prep station (now we have 3) and it makes a great place to serve dinner when we have a large crowd over.

Despite a couple small hiccups, I'd say the months of research I did paid off.  I'm very pleased with the results so far.  We have finish work to do and need to get the counter top in plus a few things you can't see but will bug me in the long run.

Random notes to read if you'd like to know more: I began my research for an eco-friendly kitchen remodel, well as eco-friendly you can get for a remodel on a small kitchen budget.  The FSC certified (forest stewardship council--ensures forests are managed for future use aka no clear cutting) cabinets were way out of reach of our budget.  I looked at the big box stores and an independent cabinet shop but the quotes and cabinet manufacturing process astonished me.  We settled on cabinets from IKEA for several reasons.  First they have minimal chemical off gassing (low odor) which was a must since chemicals trigger my nasty migraines.  IKEA has been making strides in environmental and social responsibility, big positive there.  Of course the cabinets were affordable and the ones I picked were not made in China.  I'm not so much against China but supporting work in other countries.  It turns out our cabinet boxes were made here in the US, the hardware was made in Austria and the doors and drawer fronts in Hungary-just fun to know where it all comes from.   Despite the stigma associated with IKEA, these cabinets are nice and the hardware is awesome.  I have all drawers on the bottom, excluding the sink cabinet, full extension drawers.  All the drawers and doors have dampers so no more slamming cabinet doors, such a nice noise to my ears or rather lack of.  I'm officially spoiled!

To finish off the kitchen, we will have a countertop made with recycled glass.  Stay tuned, I'll updated again on the kitchen once we have the counter in.

Fresh Air

I titled the last post "Personality" primarily because the pictures showed off some of Elena's personality but her personality is blooming.  She is interacting with other kids at play dates and even insists their cups are hers as she says "miiiiiine" in a gremlin-like voice.  She learned this from them, so I guess it's fitting she's starting to give it back to them.
In other personality news, Elena is beginning to throw tantrums.  I know people say the terrible twos really start at 18 months, but I was really hoping Elena would reach this stage late, as I'm sure that is the hope of most parents with toddlers.
Even with the added tantrums, Elena is still a beautiful little girl full of light.  She loves running around as you can see from the images I captured today.  Just a few minutes of fresh air does Elena's tantrums wonders.
I just love these plaid shorts.  They are too cute!
We hope you are having a wonderful day!!

Personality

So Elena makes quite a few animal noises, but when it comes to a pig she won't "oink".  Nope, she continues to try to snort as you can see above.  Not much noise comes out but it is hilarious to watch her.
Elena has started coloring with colored pencils instead of crayons because won't eat the pencils.  Crayons break off easily and are difficult to get out of Elena's mouth--those little teeth are sharp!

Avocado Monster

In the past 17-1/2 months, have I ever mentioned how much Elena enjoys eating????
Tonight she smashed avocado on her belly, up her arms and in her hair.  She also stashed a handful inside her booster chair for later.  I had to share a few pictures.  Elena does know how to use a fork but would rather shove food in her mouth by hand.  Her motto seems to be to get the most amount of food in her mouth in the least amount of time.  Or as a friend said as she watch Elena inhale food, "she eats like a boy".
In the past couple of days, Elena has been putting her fingers in her mouth...well just on her top front teeth.  She was doing it again while I was taking pictures but her fingers slipped.  She looks a little funny, but you can finally see her little teeth!

In other Elena news, she started mooing this morning while eating cereal.  I realized this was her way of asking for yogurt since there is a picture of a cow on the yogurt container.  The milk has the same cow image but she doesn't moo for milk, she just tries to open the fridge.  Such a silly little girl, but at least consistent.

Elena is also trying to say her name on a regular basis.  It usually sounds like "nay-na" or "nay-nay-nay-nay".  She has friends that call her "Baby Nay-nay".  We all know she isn't a baby anymore but she is the baby of the group.  The other kids range from 2-4.  In the past few months, a new crop of babies were born and another crop are due in the coming months.  I'm sure soon the kids will drop 'baby'.

Oktoberfest!

A neighboring town hosts an Oktoberfest around this time of year.  It's nice to get out and enjoy fair food :)  We hoped on the trolley and met friends for great food, beer, and people watching.

Elena's first trolley ride.  She loved pointing at the airplanes.  We get on the trolley at a small air field, thus there were small planes parked not too far from the trolley stop.

We've arrived...and it was a little warm but soon we were in the mix of people and heading to the family beer garden.  Only the family garden will allow people of all ages with or without ID.  Carl and I split a brat, kraut, German potato salad, potato pancakes and a couple of beers while watching dancers perform.  Not too much later, we ran across a funnel cake stand.  I used to prefer an elephant ear to a funnel cake any day but now the funnel cake stands seem to stock the cinnamon sugar in addition to the traditional powdered sugar.  We all chowed down, even Elena (a first for her).  Who couldn't pass up cinnamon sugar sprinkled funnel cake?

On the trolley ride home, Elena is showing her tongue.  Unlike most other kids I know, if you ask her where her tongue is she will open her mouth and point to it.  I guess it is good she hasn't learned to stick it out yet :)

Elena is so happy to be on her feet again.  Have I mentioned she likes to run?

Some Pictures, Finally

The last two posts were fairly wordy with no pictures...so I've added a few from the past couple of days.

Part of our morning routine...well I guess any time we are changing diaper, Elena looks out the window.  She points at the bright pink flowers growing over the fence, the mocking birds flitting about and of course the military helicopters that fly over.
Elena brushing her teeth.  I wish brushing teeth was this easy every time.  On days when Elena doesn't want to brush her teeth (corresponds to teething times) I have to hold her down and sing a song about brushing teeth.  Lots of crying but clean teeth!

Elena likes to pick out her bows and clothes.  We may have a little fashionista, although she doesn't like to have her hair brushed.

This picture was taken this morning, Elena is blowing kisses.  It's raining outside, well more like a heavy sprinkle.  Rain of any kind this time of year is nearly unheard of.  Just two days ago it reached 113 degrees, yesterday in the 90s and that's what we are expecting today.  Usually any tropical moisture evaporates before hitting the ground.  This sure has been an unusual summer!

Tinkle, Tinkle

Over the past week, Elena has been teething in a major way.  She has at least 2 of the remaining 3 twelve month molars and 2 bicuspids trying to pop through.  Poor girl was a wreck this weekend.  She is feeling better but her teething diaper rash has finally caught up with her.  These rashes are horrible and hurt her very much.  The best pain reliever is to go diaper free.  Of course this means piddle pads to protect the couch and some PBS toddler shows to keep her in one spot, aka diaper free quiet time.  In the midst of quiet time, she climbed off the couch and went to the corner.  For a split second I wondered what she was doing and then...I'm sure you have guessed the outcome...as I realized what was going on, she started tinkling on the floor (thank goodness we don't have carpet).  As soon as I touched her shoulders to pick her up, she stopped.  I took her to the potty and she finished tinkling there.  I am so excited!  I would love to have an early potty trainer.  I've read kids understand at her age and if left naked for three days with super supervision you can break them into using the potty during the day.  Not to say accidents won't happen...but I am dreaming of the day I can pack away the cloth diapers.  Of course that means learning the location of all the public toilets and I'm sure if you ask me in a few months I'd prefer Elena in diapers to using public toilets.

Ee-i-ee-i-Oh

So today Elena is 17 months old.  She is active, yet content and this seems to be an unusual mix of traits.  Elena loves to run around the house, the yard and even up and down the sidewalk.  She is great playing by herself, with us or even other little kiddos.  Elena is full of light and life.

I haven't been taking as many pictures of Elena lately--she's frequently on the go which leads to blurry pictures.  So I don't have any for this post but I just couldn't pass up posting about such a cute moment we had today.  Elena chimed in singing Old MacDonald Had A Farm.  She's been singing "ee-i-ee-i-oh" for a couple weeks now, and it is so adorable.  And we have been working on animal sounds--it's a good distraction when we are the go and it works with most of her books.  Elena put the tune together and will sing the animal noises and the ee-i-ee-i-oh part and it is so adorable!

Elena's vocabulary has been growing.  She likes to point out the stars "dar" and moon "mooh" in the sky, books or even on tv.  She can say 'yes' and 'no' but would rather shake her head in the appropriate direction...and I must say, I like this method too.  So far no screaming 'no' and even when Elena is getting upset she is easily distracted.  I'm not sure if I already mentioned but Elena can also say 'noodle', 'go', 'hi', 'bye-bye', makes her lips vibrate for helicopters and planes and when she wants milk, she goes the fridge.  If you ask her if she dirtied her diaper and she has, she will go to the bathroom although she still doesn't like sitting on the potty.  Elena also understands changing her diaper and and time for bed and will walk back to her room for both phrases.  She also knows when her shoes are on we are going outside--and she gets just as excited as Cooper does--they both love being outside!

Morning at the Zoo

Now that tourist season is over, the weather is back in the 70's and perfect for a morning out.  So we ventured out to see the animals.  I am really enjoy our membership, we go for a couple of hours, bring a snack and head home for lunch. What a treat!
Enough of the pandas...let's get going.  Run, run, run!  Elena is into running, she loves our "walks", she runs, we walk briskly and everyone is happy :)

Here are a few pictures of the animals we said hi to:

Noodles

Elena loves her food but eating isn't always pretty...

The doctor said Elena should be using utensils but Elena would rather use her hands to shovel food into her mouth, better efficiency I suppose.  When given a spoon or fork she uses her hands to put food on the utensil and then picks the food off with her hands and puts it into her mouth; what a silly girl!

This is what happens when you take your eye off Elena for a moment.  It is amazing how many noodles (substitute any food here) she can throw onto the floor in a few handfuls.
